PHCN workers protest unpaid entitlements

•CRISIS: PHCN workers protesting the non-payment of their entitlements in Abuja…yesterday

Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) workers protested yesterday the non-payment of their entitlements, to stall the take-over of the company by new owners.

In Abuja, they barricaded the entrance to the headquarters at Maitama District.

A few minutes away, President Goodluck Jonathan was presenting the certificate and licences to the new owners at the Banquet Hall of the State House.

Watched over by a military team, the workers were peaceful in the protest. They carried placards, one of which read: “Jonathan, please pay PHCN staff severance packages.”

The Chairman, National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Comrade James Ademola Ayeni, said the workers were protesting the handover of PHCN facilities to investors who claimed to have bought them over.

He noted that by July, the Federal Government reached an agreement with the union that government should privatise PHCN before handover to the buyers and ensure that all the labour issues are sorted out as agreed.

Ayeni said it was agreed that the government should regularise the staff so that they will be entitled to severance packages but the government is yet to comply with this understanding.

According to him, the Federal Government agreed that every worker will be paid severance package based on the time spent since the incoming investors cannot inherit the liabilities of the workers who did not work for them.

Asked how many PHCN workers have been settled, he said “25% of the workforce”. “They just paid their severance package but they have not paid they pension, which is supposed to go to the PFA.

“We do it peacefully and the way we do it is to ensure that all PHCN installations are shut down all over Nigeria; then we carry out a protest peacefully for the government to come and ask us what is happening and we will be able to tell them so that you will know who is lying,” Ayeni said.

In Gombe, workers locked up the company’s offices. They carried placards with various inscriptions, saying they would not allow the handover of the company to private investors until their entitlements were settled.

Addressing workers in Gombe, the leader of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Mr Yakubu Dung, urged the Federal Government to settle the labour issues.

In Kano, the North Zonal Chapter of the NUEE held a peaceful demonstration over the matter.

The General-Secretary of the union, Mr Joe Ajaero, said the demonstration was because of the government’s “silence” on their entitlements.

The Chairman of the NLC in Kano State, Malam Yunusa Danguguwa, expressed the congress’ support to the unions, saying it was determined to ensure the resolution of the stalemate with the government.

The protesting workers, who besieged the PHCN premises, carried placards, with inscriptions such as: “No to enslavement, settle our entitlements before habding over, we will resist forceful handover.’’

‘’We are using today as stage one to protest and express our dismay in the protest, described as peaceful, that is why all the workers are within the compound of the headquarters of PHCN, representing, Kano, Jigawa and Katsina.’’

Nollywood celebrities are now speaking up exactly 24 hours after the video of Jim Iyke’s deliverance at Pastor TB Joshua’s church surfaced.

Jim Iyke’s colleagues in the Nigerian movie industry claim he was paid by the alleged false prophet to act up the whole deliverance episode.

Segun Arinze who claims Nollywood is now entering church said the following via his Blackberry update few hours ago;
“This Jim Iyke’s deliverance video at the Synagogue trending looks too contrived. It’s a big embarrassment. Has anyone ever seen demons come out live and speak? Una fit stand demons? Our amalgamation is a mistake – Ankio-Briggs

MS Ankio Briggs, rights activist and one of the leaders of the National Summit Group, says there is nothing to celebrate at 53 and the amalgamation of Northern and Southern protectorates to create Nigeria was a mistake. Excerpts:

How do you view Nigeria at 53?

I’m yet to see what we are celebrating. If we are celebrating the fact that we have had independence for 53 years and lived together for a 100 years then, 100 is just a figure. When you are celebrating, you have to show what you have achieved. And the question I’m asking is what have we achieved?


Unity? We are not united in this country. Developmentally, what have we achieved? I mean in things like roads and what have you? These are the things that should matter as we are progressing. We shouldn’t now be building roads at 100.

We should be improving on what we have built may be at 30, 40, 50, 60, not starting the development of Nigeria after a 100 years of being together.

So, for me, those are the things I use as yardstick to measure Nigeria. Like other countries are sending satelite into the space, Nigeria sent a satelite and lost it.

So, we should ask ourselves if Nigeria is not too big a country to be governed the way in which we are being governed today? Should we not have states being responsible for themselves? This is why national conference is necessary.

We have been like this for 100 years, aside the fact that we have been together and this is what everybody tells us as if it’s such a big deal to be together.

America is still together and look at what they have achieved, likewise other countries. Other countries like the Soviet Union, Sudan, have broken up.

For Nigeria, I think by age alone, we are matured enough to ask ourselves some questions and answer them in a truthful manner. We are just deceiving ourselves.

People have said the coming together of different parts of the country is a mistake, do you agree?

I totally agree, but we can’t take responsibility for that, I might say, because it’s not Nigerians that created Nigeria.

It’s Lord Luggard who created Nigeria that brought us together and called us one people. But it’s very clear today that that’s not so. The North is the North and the South is the South.

These regions are made up of so many people with different cultures, religions, foods and different ways of looking at things.

And when you bring them together to say they should look at things the same way, you are telling them to look at Nigeria in only one way.

But one day, some of this people will wake up and say, look, things are not working for us this way.

The people it works for will resist other people who don’t want the process to remain like that. So, this is the problem Nigeria is having and anybody that doesn’t see it like that is not telling himself the truth.

Do we have any basis for Nigeria’s unity?

We have basis in the sense that it’s our choice. It should be our choice and it will be our choice, because that’s why we have these discussions going on now. I believe Nigeria can be a great country and that Nigerians can live together.

Look at the circumstances we are in and we are still able to manage it and to drag it along. But we shouldn’t be managing. We should have some rules and regulations that we all accept.

We should agree on how and when we are going to do it and once we agree, it will be much easier. The problem we are having is that we didn’t agree. And we have not found the basis on which we are agreeing. We must find that basis. It’s possible to live together. But the question is how? What are the terms and conditions?

Nobody is saying we shouldn’t live together. We are saying how? Who brings what? Who owns what? Who controls what? How much should I bring? How much should you bring? How much

What if we keep everything and pay something to the centre? These are the things we need to look at together. We can live together, but how?

Now, how do you think we can live together in peace and harmony in Nigeria?

Well, it won’t be for one person alone. I can only speak for my people. Like for instance, I come from Rivers State, which is in Niger Delta region.

For instance, most of what we are using to develop the country today is coming from my region, from my state.

Now, all I’m saying is that that should not be so. It has made every other state which does not have oil not to bring anything to the table.

So, what I’m saying is that we should have ownership of our resources and pay tax to the Federal Government. That way, everybody will be responsible for themselves.

And then, we from the Niger Delta will not feel that the weight of developing Nigeria is on our back and that we as a people are not gaining anything from it.

What percentage of tax do you think the regions should pay to the centre?

Taxes are usually 5 per cent, 2 per cent, 40 per cent and whatever. It’s something we must all agree upon. I mean, it’s not something that I will say, it should be like this.

What percentage do you suggest?

Well, I think 10 per cent

They also agreed that there is need for a national conference for the people to dialogue and agree on the terms to boost the country’s unity and address her plethora of problems.

Senate President David Mark assessed the progress of Nigeria since the journey of its independence in 1960 and concluded that the country had fared well enough to deserve commendation.

In a goodwill message by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, the Senate President said: “We are yet to get to the level of our dreams, nobody can deny the fact that we have recorded some landmark achievements since the colonial masters left our shores.

”Besides the infrastructural developments across the country, we now have skilled and qualified manpower in virtually all fields of human endeavour.”

He therefore, implored Nigerians to renew hope and faith in the “capacity and capabilities of our people to rise to a level where citizens could enjoy an internationally acceptable standard of living, thus earning the status of a developed nation.”

ASUU STRIKE: Nigerian Students Mobilize For ‘Independence Day’ Protest

As the Federal Government prepares to mark the 53rd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule, some students are mobilizing to protest the insensitivity of the government to the plight of lecturers at various universities in the country.


It was learned from sources at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) that students at various zones of the association would demonstrate against continued closure of universities throughout the country.

In Ibadan, Oyo State, the “Zone D” leaders of NANS told our SaharaReporters that it is prepared to demonstrate on October 1st. The students said they would march from the Mokola roundabout in Ibadan, starting from 8am.
Also in Lagos, the Joint Campus Committee of NANS Lagos said the students are being mobilized to begin their protest march from the NLC building in Yaba area of Lagos.

The students insist that demands of their lecturers are reasonable and must be met by the Nigerian government.

University lecturers have been on strike since 1st of July, 2013 over President Goodluck Jonathan’s government’s failure to honor the agreements signed with them since 2009.
The university teachers had vowed that their strike will continue indefinitely will continue until the government honor 2009 agreements to revitalize the public education

“Nigeria Will Still Be Great, Happy 53rd Anniversary” – Speech of Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the State of Osun

I congratulate Nigerians on the 53rd anniversary of our nation’s independence. But as we celebrate, we must also take time to reflect on the state of the nation. The Nigerian project is a bold experiment in nation-building. It is an experiment that has proved to be a challenging undertaking. But, for me, building Nigeria is an experiment that is well worth the attempt.

At independence, on this day in 1960, Nigeria was a country full of high hopes, and good prospects, with its diverse peoples filled with aspirations. But somewhere along the line, we got it fundamentally wrong, with the consequences that, today, 53 years on, we are still struggling to get the basics right. The country is faced with tough difficulties and mortal dangers on multiple fronts. Our efforts at nation-building are being affronted by manifold crises of under-development – bad governance; poor planning; industrial collapse; decay of basic infrastructure; socio-economic backwardness; political instability; insecurity; widespread poverty; social, ethnic and religious tension; high incidence of crime and criminality; and terrorism among many other woes.

These are undeniably serious setbacks to our development march; but they do not amount to any permanent incapacity for us not to move forward. Indeed, setbacks are necessary but temporary impediments along the path to progress. Therefore, I am at one with American entrepreneur, Les Brown, who counselled that: ‘Anytime you suffer a setback or disappointment. Put your head down and plow ahead’. Hence, I remain convinced that the Nigerian project is a viable one. And I am optimistic that we may yet get it right as a country; and convert our much vaunted great potentials into actual benefits for our people. All we need is sound leadership and good governance.

ngr2Indeed, our story on the independence path has not been doom and gloom only; it is also strewn with bright patches and shades of greatness. We have had sporting glories, a Nobel Prize in literature, representation in the top universities in the world and a Nigerian got in the Forbes 100 top list. For the most part, we groan so much at the cup being three quarter empty that we forgot it’s also one quarter full.

As someone in leadership position, I set my sight firmly on the promises the future holds and the opportunities that our great country can offer. My aspirations are for Nigeria to be able to overcome its development challenges, and to become one of the top 10 economies in the world in the shortest time possible. But we need to work towards achieving these goals. As a matter of urgency, we must shift our economic paradigm from sole dependence on oil towards productive diversification. Agriculture is a viable alternative here. We must develop our agriculture towards achieving food security. We must give primacy to food production as a strategic national imperative, for it is a sure basis for sustainable economic development.

Indeed, pursuing food security as a strategic value goes beyond merely feeding the people. Food security is a core pillar of national security. No nation can have genuine national security without food security. Therefore, if we make food security the driving force of our agricultural development, the accompanying spin-offs it will generate can only add greater value to our overall economic development efforts.

My conviction about agriculture as a viable solution to our unemployment problem lay in the fact that, an agricultural economy that is grounded in food production cannot fail. People can give up luxury items if occasion demands it. But for as long as we remain human, we will eat; food is a biological necessity! Luxury item are a matter of choice. People for instance can very easily forgo chocolate; but it would be hard to imagine them forgoing staple food like rice or potato. Food security is an essential condition for national security.

Related to this is the need to gainfully and meaningfully engage our youths by creating jobs and employment opportunities. Our present chronic youth unemployment situation is a potential source of social explosion. There is profound wisdom in productively engaging our youths. Young people are some of society’s greatest assets; but they can also be a major source of its problem. In Nigeria, youths constitute the bulk of our productive population, and that bulk is overwhelmingly unemployed! In other words, we have a potentially advantageous youth bulge in our population, which could also be turned into a bug by prolonged lack of employment.

Young people are energetic, talented, innovative, aspirational, and daring. These are good qualities for economic enterprise. We only need to be creative to harness them for the rapid socio-economic transformation of our country. Again, agriculture presents enormous possibilities in this regard. Our huge population offers immense opportunities as a market, and for massive job creation, that can absorb our teeming unemployed youths, and help in eradicating poverty.

Another area of great promise is information and communications technology. ICT also offers enormous possibilities for creating jobs and for meaningfully engaging our youths. After all, ICT is a field that is not only a product of innovation, it is driven by human creativity. Innovation and creativity are an area of strength for young people. They will have their imagination taxed and their minds energised. It can help focus the vibrant energies of our youths on positive development. In addition, it is a fertile area of almost infinite possibilities where the only limitation is the human imagination. Again, all we need do is to get our acts together; think and organise so that we can make the most of the opportunities available to us.

Essential to modern life and any economic endeavour is power, but this is an area in which the nation has been badly struggling. The circa 4,000mw the nation produces is a huge joke. This, when the economy is in full throttle, cannot even serve the Ikeja business district. Admittedly there have been great efforts at addressing the problem but they have amounted to little. This is the time to discard the old approach and tackle the problem of power squarely. We must be jolted by the realisation that without sufficient electric power, all other efforts will come to nought.

I am not trying to make light of the formidable challenges involved in making a success of the Nigerian project; my point is that the difficulties are not an excuse for failure. In fact, they are a compelling reason for us to try to overcome them. I am an unflinching believer in the assertion of George Bernard Shaw that ‘[t]he only real failure in life is the failure to try’. It is in our utmost interest not to fail to try. Success is only born of trying, and I am in no doubt at all that if we genuinely keep trying, we shall surely overcome.

October 1st of every year offers us the opportunity to review the journey of nationhood and to come to the awareness that just as we have the prospect of greatness, so also are we faced with the grim possibility of tipping over the brink; the probability of outcomes now depends on the choices that we make. It is my fervent hope and prayer, however, that we will always make the right choices and realise our greatest potential.

Police nab three teenage stowaways at Lagos airport

The Airport Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested three teenagers for allegedly attempting to illegally board some international flights in Lagos.

Commissioner of Police for the command, Salahu Waheed, said the suspects, Lateef Popoola, 13; Amadi Joshua, 14; and Ukpabio Onyedikachi, 14, were arrested at different times at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja.

Waheed, while handing over the suspects to their mothers, said there was a need for their respective state governments to rehabilitate them like the Edo State Government did with teenage stowaway, Daniel Ihekina, who was arrested on August 24, 2013 after sneaking into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane.

He said, “These boys were found at different times at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Their aim was to get into any plane and travel out of Nigeria.

“I decided to hand them over to their parents so they will be well taken care of and stop dwelling on the fantasy that you can just come into the airport, enter a plane and travel.

“Their state governments should try to rehabilitate them just like Edo State did for the stowaway in Benin.

“Lateef Popoola is from Ogun State; Amadi Joshua is from Ebonyi while Ukpabio Onyedikachi is from Abia State.

“The airport is not a place that you can just come into and travel. There are formalities. We don’t want to see these children here again.”

The teenagers, who spoke to PUNCH Metro, said they had been nursing the idea of travelling abroad, adding that they were not ready to execute their plans yet.

Lateef said he went to the tarmac to observe how aeroplanes take off and land.

He said he was able to gain access to the runaway by sneaking into an airport apron bus, but was arrested shortly after alighting.

He said, “I am not in school, I dropped out in Primary three. I was arrested last week Wednesday. I actually wanted to travel but I have yet to decided where I will go. So, I just went to the tarmac to see the aeroplanes.”

Lateef’s grandmother, Adunni, said she had no idea that her grandson was nursing the idea of travelling out of the country. She said she had been responsible for his upkeep since his mother abandoned him at infancy.

“I did not know that he wanted to travel. I just did not see him last week and I started looking for him all over the place. It was on Saturday that I finally found out that he had been arrested,” she said.

Onyedikachi and Joshua were said to have been arrested after asking some security agents where Malaysia flights were boarding.

After being questioned, the boys, who were both in SS1, said they had no travel documents and were immediately arrested.

Police said Onyedikachi’s brother was in Malaysia and it was possible that the teenager wanted to travel out to see his brother.

Onyedikachi, however said, “We were at the departure area of the airport. We did not attempt to travel out. We were just loitering and wanted to see the aeroplanes. We did not want to travel out on that day.”

Onyedikachi’s mother berated her son for his escapade. She said she had warned him and Joshua to be well behaved at all times.

She said, “I had no knowledge of what they did. Onyedikachi is well taken care of and is not suffering. I don’t know what pushed him to do this.”

Gov. Fashola Finally Unveils The Tallest Hotel In West Africa

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, yesterday, unveiled the N30 billion tallest hotel in West Africa, the Intercontinental Lagos.

The hotel located at Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, is a 23-storey building with 358 rooms, 37 suites and a presidential suite.

The Intercontinental Lagos, a subsidiary of the Intercontinental Hotel Group, IHG, is owned by the Milan Group.

Fashola said the new hotel showed that the economy of the country was witnessing growth daily but without corresponding employment.

According to him, “The new sector is the tourism sector. This is the only virgin sector in the country, and it will help address the challenges of unemployment in the country.”

The governor noted that the new hotel had helped to create new 650 direct jobs in the state, adding that with the construction of more hotels and hospitality outfits, more direct jobs would be created as well as numerous indirect jobs.

Chairman, Milan Group, Ramesh Valechha said the hotel will change the landscape of Lagos and boost the hospitality industry in the state.

He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, for the project was signed on March 31, 2004 while it took two years to complete the design work before the conceptualisation of the project began.

He revealed that the Lagos State Government, Skye Bank and Wema Bank were supportive of the project.

According to Valechha, building of the hotel cost over N30 billion, while 650 jobs were created for Nigerians.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Akiolu 1; ex-governor of CBN, Joseph Sanusi, and other dignitaries.

20-year old Matthew Flugence of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, claimed that his 6-year old step-cousin, Ahlittia North, seduced him before he stabbed her and watched her die.He stated that she spread out a blanket on the ground and told him she wanted to have sex with him; after that he says he “snapped.”

The Daily Mail reports that he stabbed the little girl, watched her die and then he wrapped her body in a blanket; next he put it in a trash can where it was found three days later. Flugence is being held on a charge of first degree murder; it is believed that his defense is going to ask for a psychological evaluation.

The List Of Highest Paid Nigerian Artistes And The Amount They Make

A list of top Nigerian highest paid hip-hop artistes was recently released by Encomium magazine; perfectly researched and confirmed.

The list had the music duo of P'Square topping it as the highest paid hip hop act. The music duo are learnt to be charging between N9 and N10 million for a show within Nigeria.

D'banj comes second on the list with a charge between N6 and N7 million to grace any event in the country. Before the split from Mo'Hit, D'banj topped the list with charges between N7 and N8 million while P-Square was N5 million.

2face comes the third highest paid artiste on the list. Although his fee is not consistent, He is said to be charging between N5 and N6 million. It was learnt that 2face because of his love and passion for the art easily adjust fees and not always keen like other acts on their particular amount.

Wizkid is the fourth on the list with a gracing fee of N4 to N5 million. Artistes like Owawunmi who actually is the highest paid female star, Flavour, Timaya and Olamide charges N3 million. Others in this category are Darey Art Alade, Duncan Mighty, and Chocolate Music artistes, M.I and Ice-Prince.

"ASUU Has Been Unfair To The Nigerian Students"

According to Obasi. D. C. Chinedu from Voice of the Nigerian Tertiary Institutions (VNTI), the striking members of The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been unfair in their treatment of the Nigerian students.

Obasi argues that the past weeks of the strike have shown that either ASUU has been selfish on their demands, or they are not telling the truth. He notes the Union should keep in mind that Nigerian students are unlikely to support the strike or the lecturers' demands blindly, without knowing what these demands are.

Obasi keeps on stating that ASUU has not demonstrated any flexibility in negotiations with the Federal Government:

"when it comes to negotiations, you don’t just make a demand, and stand on it, else, its no longer a negotiation, but a command."

He says it was gathered that ASUU initially mae the public to believe that their demands were sincerely about improving the standard of education, but FG has "rubbished" that presenting the "real fact" saying, “They initially told us that it was about infrastructure, but it is about allowances. N30b has been released for the payment of their accumulated allowances, and N100b earmarked for infrastructural development. It is important for the public to know that government did not say this is all that it will give, but government says go and start the payment with this amount and let us know the amount it will add”.

Obasi asks what is this infrastructure development that ASUU demands?

"With what’s said above, Its either the striking ASUU members are being unfair with their treatment of the Nigerian students, or their is something they are not telling us, about their, “Pulling out of the negotiation table.” Is this how they expect to resolve the crisis???"

He further argues that it has become clear that the striking lecturers are either no longer interested in the jobs or need a break from work. Its time, Obasi says, for the FG to implement the 'no work, no wage' rule.

"Whatever the situation may be, its time the ASUU members come to terms with what’s on ground, or stir the ire of the Nigerian Youths," Obasi concludes.

FG's Plan To Unveil A New National Carrier On October 1 Under Attack

The Federal Government plan to unveil a new national carrier on October 1 - in commemoration of the country’s 53th independence anniversary - is under attack from analysts.

They say the development is a step back to the dark ages, in view of the current global sentiments towards divestments.

The new airline would come out of the merger of Aero Contractors and Air Nigeria airlines, which are indebted to the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), according to BusinessDay findings.

This is coming on the heels of refusal of some international airlines to partner with the local airlines due to the enduring crisis in the sector.

Bismarck Rewane, chief executive, Financial Derivatives company in the recent release observed that the last national carrier - Nigeria Airways - was plagued by mismanagement and therefore ceased operations in 2003.

“Back to the dark ages. Governments are divesting from airline business globally, but Nigeria is unveiling a national carrier officially to the public on October 1, which will comprise airlines indebted to the government via AMCON, Aero Contractors and Air Nigeria.”

Reports say the new airline will be funded through a private sector public offering of about N200 billion with government retaining 25 percent stake, and remaining percent controlled by yet to be disclosed private investors.

Boko Haram cannot frustrate Nigeria, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday declared that the activities of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram or any other group cannot frustrate Nigeria.

Speaking at the 53rd Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service in Abuja, he condemned the killing of 21 Agriculture students in Yobe State yesterday.

According to him, the challenges and obstacles Nigeria is going through are transient and the country will soon get over them.

He said that Nigeria has got to the turning point where it will join other developed nations as it is perfecting the starting point of conducting free and fair elections.

Stressing that the country is almost there, he said that there are some forces in the country working against the nation.

He said that all those trying to cause problem for the nation will not succeed, saying that his administration will leave the country better than it met it.

He said: “No Boko Haram or any group can frustrate this country. We may suffer pains just like our Lord Jesus said at the critical moment that though the spirit is willing but the body is weak.
Sometimes our body is very weak, we feel the pains of those who are our direct relations of those who have been killed carelessly. These are things I believe is the creation of the devil to slow down our progress as a nation.”

“Today you will agree with me that if you were in my shoes you will lack words to say. We had this programme in mind, we went to bed last night so that by this time today we will all gather here to thank God for what he has done for this country. But then only few minutes after 12 last night about 21 students were murdered in Yobe state by a group that describes themselves as Boko Haram.”

“If you were wearing my shoes, what courage will you have to stand here before Nigerians, what message would you send to Nigerians, the parents of these young people, our future leaders, students in the school of agriculture.”

“Do you say that the killing of these students is political? Which of the political parties do the students belong to? People who killed them don’t even know them. Do you say it is ethnic? Which ethnic group do the students belong to? Do you say it is religion or belief? These students are they Christians or Muslims?” He queried

“This is the situation that plays almost on a daily basis.
It is quiet depressing. But having listened to the message of the CAN President you will agree with me that all of us have hope and by God’s grace we will get to where we want to go as a nation.” He added

“The journey of a nation is like the journey of an individual, we must have obstacles. Sometimes they say it is even darker when it is getting to the dawn of the day. The challenges we are seeing now are very transient and we will get to the end of it.

Stressing that Nigeria is at the dawn of greatness, he said: “Nigeria is at the turning point where I believe we must move and join the global society. If you look at the journeys of nations, first and foremost before you liberate people you must make sure that they have a civilised way of electing their leaders and we have almost reached there.”

“We must make sure we conduct free and fair elections, but forces of evil don’t want it that way. They want a situation where they will continue to impose themselves or whoever they like on the people. Look at the successes in the telecom industry and we now say the power sector that immediately we liberalise it will now be like the telecom industry.”

Wickedness! 20-Yr-Old Jealous Ex-Girlfriend Sets Rival On Fire For Snatching Her Boyfriend (Photo)


According to a report by Sunnewsonline.com, a 20 year old girl allegedly set ablaze the 22 year old new love interest of her ex-boyfriend. Cynthia Onah reportedly went to her ex-boyfriend's house at Onugba Nike area in Enugu State late at night with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content on Chinwe Igwe, her ex's girlfriend, who was sleeping. The incident took place on August 24th.

The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu described the incident as very unfortunate. “It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy.”
CP Adamu explained that on that fateful day, Cynthia had in connivance with another suspect, one Obiora Chukwuegbo stormed Chika’s home and set Chinwe on fire. It was only the assistance of neighbours that Chinwe was rescued through the window as the fire consumed the room. She was said to have been taken to a private hospital before she was transferred to Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene, Enugu State where she is still receiving treatment.

The boyfriend, Chika says,

“I am a driver and I’ve been dating Chinwe for the past five years. We had little quarrel and we stopped dating. I meet Cynthia who is a prostitute and dated her for just one month. We separated one month after because at times she would be chasing me with a knife. I couldn’t bear it and so I went back to settle with my former girlfriend. Cynthia didn’t give up as she threatened that she was going to deal with us. She even threatened to pour acid on me.
Being a driver, I travelled the day Cynthia burnt my girlfriend. It was one of my neighbours that called me to say that my house was on fire and that somebody poured fuel under the door and it exploded and burnt my girlfriend who was sleeping in the room; that they have rescued her through the window.
“When I got home, I saw that all my property had been burnt to ashes. My girlfriend was hospitalized because she sustained injuries from the fire. But I am determined and I have promised God that with the condition of my girlfriend that I am still going to marry her.”The suspect, Cynthia, who hails from Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, said

“I started dating Chika when he had misunderstanding with his former girlfriend, Chinwe. We dated for one month and then he told me that he was no longer interested in marrying me. Chika is owing me N12,000. When we had a quarrel, I did not threaten him with a knife. I only used the knife to deflate his tyres.
“I have quarreled with Chinwe several times. I sent her a text message to leave my boyfriend. Because she threatened me, I also threatened her that she will never enjoy the relationship. I don’t know anything about who took fuel to the house of her boyfriend and burnt the house. On that fateful day, Chika called my phone at night and said that I should meet him at Emene junction. I was out waiting for him when the policemen from the State CID arrested me. I didn’t know anything about the incident. I only know we have traded words.”When Sunday Sun visited the victim at the Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene Area, Enugu State, she said:

“I am still shocked at what happened. I regret dating Chika as I have been turned to something else now. I saw Cynthia Onah and Chukwuegbo Obiora after they had poured fuel under the door and fire was everywhere. I was calling him for help. It was when I was calling for help through the other window that I saw Cynthia Onah and Obiora Chkwuegbo running away and I was shouting for help until the neighbours broke one of the windows and carried me out from the window”, she said.
“My relationship with Chika is over. I am in pains and agony. I didn’t know what to do. I was sleeping and suddenly I saw smoke and it exploded and caught fire. I could have been burnt to ashes if not for the neighbours who broke through the window and rescued me,” she added.CP Adamu said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

REVEALED: Goodluck Jonathan To Arrest Obasanjo, Atiku

The Abubakar Baraje led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the party has uncovered plots by President Goodluck Jonathan to arrest former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his erstwhile deputy, Atiku Abubakar.
Similarly, the party also said members of the league of G7 governors and leaders of the Baraje faction have also been marked for arrest ad detention.

Governors in the G7 are: Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Musa Kwankwaso (Kano); Murtala Nyako (Adamawa); Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara).
In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Eze, the faction said intelligence report in its possession revealed that the Presidency was already putting finishing touches to the plan.
According the party, the Presidency’s plot is code named “Operation Total Crackdown on G7 and their allies in the New PDP”.
“When we got details of the plot to arrest and commit the leadership of New PDP to prison without charge we thought it was a joke.
“The reality, however, dawned on us after we read the interview of our friend and brother, Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, in the PREMIUM TIMES of 26th September, 2013, confirming that President Goodluck Jonathan is under pressure to arrest former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar without any further delay.
“The sin of these two distinguished Nigerian statesmen, according to those plotting their “demystification”, is their alleged support for the New PDP, including the G7 Governors. That this evil plot is being conceived by the Presidency confirms that the Abacha days are truly here again with us”, the statement added.
The party said in view of the development, the leadership of the Baraje group had, in an emergency meeting of its National Working Committee, brainstormed on how best to respond to the plot.
“Our conclusion at the end of the meeting was that we would not be intimidated for any reason, even if it means death, as we are fighting a just cause of reclaiming, recovering and establishing our party based on the vision of its founding fathers as the party is currently usurped by some members who do not know how it was formed.
“Baraje, knowing how dirty some of the hawks in the Presidency can fight when pushed to the wall, directed NWC members to write their wills immediately after the meeting as we have entered the stage of no retreat and no surrender – fully determined to reclaim what rightly belongs to us”, the party said.
Baraje urged the G7 Governors not to be intimidated or frightened by any tactics or strategy employed by “state forces” to coerce them to forgo any of the issues they have been asked to present before President Jonathan in the October 7 meeting.
The party regretted that instead of employing diplomacy to attend to the issues that brought about the present conflict, the Presidency had chosen to apply force.
Baraje said that rather than being disturbed by the plot, his members are ready for any tactics that may be adopted by the Presidency in the alleged crackdown.
“In this regard, we wish to urge both the Presidency and those detailed to attack us not to waste time or wait till October 7 to start arresting us, as there are thousands of Nigerians ready to step into our shoes and fight this cause to its conclusion.
“We are convinced that at the appropriate time; Asari Dokubo will join us when he is convinced as a social crusader, the injustice we have been subjected to in PDP all these years so we are not threatened by his outbursts”, Baraje added.
The party quoted a one time President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, to buttress its determination to face the alleged threat squarely.
Roosevelt had stated in that memorable speech: “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country.”

Notorious robbery Kingpins, Godogodo & co shock court by begging for Amnesty

There was a mild drama at the office of the Lagos State Police Commissioner in Ikeja on Friday as three suspects, who were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, were paraded before the House Committee on Police Affairs.

The suspects, Abiodun Ogunjobi, aka Godogodo; Felix Sunday, aka K Money; and Nwanyim Uche; pleaded for amnesty.

Godogodo had been described by the police as the most wanted criminal in the South West for the past 10 years.He told the lawmakers that he had built six houses from his loot and never kept money in the bank in order not to be traced by security agents.He said,
“I never drank, womanized or attended social events. Such vices made one vulnerable and made it easy for the police to find and arrest you. I had no friends. I never kept money; I used all of it to build the houses.
“We don’t kill policemen except on one occasion when we went to rob in Ajah area of Lagos State. On that particular day, we had ended the robbery operation and were on our way back when my friend, Odun spotted a police patrol van. Odun opened fire and killed all of them because he needed their AK 47 rifles.
“The unfortunate thing about crime is that you never have peace of mind. The police were always after me and I never lived in one particular house for more than a year. I regret my action now and I would be happy if I am given amnesty.”
The other robbery suspect, K Money, who was among the robbers that attacked bureau de change operators at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, and killed two policemen, said the gang made $4m (N600m) in the operation.
He said he got N45m and became a car dealer.He said,

“I set up a showroom and registered my company. I bought many Tokunbo (foreign used vehicles) from Cotonou (Benin Republic)and started selling them.
“When policemen started chasing me and my boys, I was completely disorganised and the business suffered. I plead for mercy sir.”Uche was said to be a member of the gang that kidnapped the Chairman, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Kehinde Bamgbetan; and a High Court judge.

The Officer in Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, told the lawmakers that Uche’s cohorts were killed during a shootout with his men a few months ago.Kyari explained that the modus operandi of Uche’s gang was to kidnap their victim, keep him in a house in the Agbara area of Ogun State while Uche would watch over him. The rest of the gang would then relocate to a hotel and negotiate a ransom with the victim’s family.

After collecting the ransom, the suspects would flee to Ghana for some months before returning for another operation.

Uche, while weeping profusely, said, “I never knew I would be involved in such a thing, I never knew I could stoop so low in life. I plead for mercy.

LAGOS—PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathanyesterday vehemently denied signing a one-term agreement either officially or unofficially with any individual or group in 2011 as has been widely speculated.

Jonathan, who spoke during his periodic media chat with a team of journalists, said: “I have not signed agreement with anybody. If I have signed agreement, they would have shown you.”

Similarly, the President refused to clear the air on his intention to re-contest, saying that it was early to comment on 2015.

According to him, early politicking was against the spirit and letters of the Electoral Act and could also destabilize the polity.

His words: “We have laws in this country. I quite appreciate that Electoral Laws tend to regulate political activities. If you do it earlier, you will destabilize the country. Don’t force a President to declare. It is against the Electoral Law. It has time.”

He, however said that any Nigerian, who is seeking to contest the office of the President in 2015 should not wait for him to declare before making his or her intention known.

“Don’t wait for me to declare before you declare your intention if you want to contest”, the President added. A lot of people are misinforming Nigerians. I was in Addis-Ababa, that was the time I advocated a single tenure. The way you look at the politics of Nigeria now, the country is just developing, in terms of the political evolution, this is about the first time; if you look at the way our polity is, I suggested that probably if the president has a single tenure of seven years running without interference, it will be productive.”

Electoral laws

He said that politicians declaring early for various respective positions are bound to over-heat the polity.

His words: “I know that our electoral laws give people time to campaign but if you start early, you will create more problems for the system. I know what it takes to campaign, for you to go round the country, you will spend a lot of money in campaigning. The electoral law gives INEC the power to set time frame for politicians who are interested in elections to begin to inform Nigerians. If you do it earlier, you will destabilize the country.

Any president, whether it is Goodluck Jonathan, as long as you still have the opportunity to contest, if you declare it early, you will create more problems in the system than solving the problems… So, don’t even force a president to declare his interest. It is even against the Electoral Act, even if it is not a sitting president. The electoral law has a time for political parties to conduct their primaries. Whatever you are doing is clandestine. You can tell your friends. A lot of people have been holding meetings silently, who has declared?”

On Apo killings


Speaking on the recent killings in Apo, President Jonathan said ‘though innocent persons may have died, there were confessions from arrested Boko Haram operatives that there were arms in that building. “Some of the people that were arrested confessed and they were leading them to where they said arms were kept and there was an exchange of gunfire. In the process some people were arrested some died. I cannot say clearly that all those who died were members of Boko Haram but definitely there were Boko Haram elements there” he said.

FG is committed to education

On the continued face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government, he said: “Some of the issues in the 2009 agreement with ASUU, maybe those who sat down to do the negotiations were civil servants, there were certain things that some of them know and agree that cannot be implemented. How can they say that assets of government should be transferred to universities? The Federal Government has so many assets, government cannot take care of universities alone. So if we transfer all the landed property of government to the universities, what about the armed forces?

“We have been faithful to the agreement because after the 2009 agreement there have been other strikes. So this strike is beyond the 2009 agreement because it is apart from those ones that talk about transferring assets of government to universities. You cannot just do that. Talking about infrastructure, the government was not forced into that but we on our side decided to go and take inventory of the infrastructure. So they should not capitalize on it, you cannot change this overnight but we are looking at this with serious commitment. We still have our challenges but you have seen the commitment of government.

On how the government plans to resolve the ASUU logjam, he appealed to ASUU to call off the strike saying that government is committed to effecting the changes.

“Members of ASUU are our brothers and sisters, they should look at the country, they should look at the young men and women and they should also look at the commitment of government. We are very sincere and my commitment is total to make changes but you cannot make this overnight. If you see the sincerity in government and given the extra things government is doing, we are committed. You should not expect us to close down other sectors of government and bring all the money to solve the problem over night.

We’re not bankrupt


Clearing the air on whether the country was bankrupt or not, the president said, “People play politics because for anybody to say that Nigeria is bankrupt, there must be some indicators. You just don’t wake up from your sleep and say Nigeria is bankrupt. Nigeria, as a nation, in terms of foreign direct investment, shows that the business environment is viable. More than 90 per cent of those who invest in our capital market are non-Nigerians. If Nigeria was bankrupt, the investors will remove their money overnight. Anybody who talks about Nigeria being bankrupt is just playing politics. If Nigeria is broke, there are parameters you use.”

Corruption

Commenting on the high rate of corruption in the country, he said: “When you talk of corruption in Nigeria, it is all about perception and index. Perception is like when you say something is wrong 100 times, it becomes true. There was a time we assembled civil society people and asked them to compare and contrast what the major problem of Nigeria was, I think corruption came third. I am not saying corruption does not exist in this country, corruption is existing and it is as old as the human race. What our administration is doing is to ensure that public funds are not exposed to people to steal.”

Sacking of ministers

Explaining the rationale behind the sack of nine ministers from the Federal Executive Council, the president said the sack had nothing to with the G7 governors.

Said he: “It has nothing to do with the G7 governors. I can tell you that some ministers dropped from different states are ministers nominated by governors very close to me. The minister dropped from KadunaState where the Vice President is from did not have issues with my Vice President. Sometimes, you just want to do something differently and since as president, you have the power to hire and fire, you just have to do it to reposition your government.”

From 1999 during ex-President Obasanjo and during Yar’Adua, was there no time ministers were not dropped? So I am surprised people are reading meaning to this sack of ministers. If they have committed an offence, that would have been a different thing but they have done nothing wrong, I just want to retool my government.”

On why he refused to re-appoint another defence minister, he said, “people talk out of ignorance sometimes in this country. Those who handle defence are the four service chiefs and not civilians. I don’t envy service chiefs because if they are to be sacked, the President just call you in and brief you and before you step out, another person has been appointed. There is no provision for gaps in the office of service chiefs. You can do away with Defence Minister but not service chiefs.

Cost of governance

Speaking on the cost of running government, he said: “We are doing well in terms of that. Recently, we just reviewed that in the parastatals. I can tell you that political appointees are not that much as people think. As a minister, you need competent people around you to function properly. Government doesn’t sponsor plenty people anytime we are traveling out of the country for events, so I wonder where people get number of people they seem to claim anytime I travel out for events. People don’t compare notes. For you to function well as president, you need competent people around you. I can tell you that there are many African presidents that travel with many more people when they attend events than me. In many countries, even when the President is sick, you won’t know because there are technocrats running the government.”

TELL us about the time you spent in the Royal Arts Academy.

My experience in the Royal Arts Academy was awesome. I learnt a whole lot about movie making and acting, and it was a stepping stone to Nollywood.

How did you get to feature in Uche Jombo’s movie False?
I actually got to feature in False through my first movie, which was Damage, featuring Uche Jombo and Kalu Ikeagwu. So, it built a relationship for me with the Uche Jumbo Studio.

What has been your most challenging movie so far?

Desperate House Girls. I had to scream and be angry – which I’m not used to. I also had to act as a village girl (laughs).

How well would you say you have fared in your acting career?
In life we learn everyday. I’m still learning and discovering I can do certain things, especially acting.
I am proud of how far I have come and I hope to go further, God willing.

What’s your relationship with Emem Isong and Uche Jombo?Emem Isong is a lady I truly admire and I look up to her as a mentor. Uche Jombo is like a sister to me. She is always willing to advise me and boost my
morale. I have a good and wonderful relationship with both of them, and I won’t trade it for anything.

What is your level of education?
I studied Mass Communication at the Imo State University and I also have a diploma in Law from the University of Abuja. But I will love to go back to
school soon.

Who was the first person you had a crush on as a pretty young girl?
(Laughs) I am still a pretty young girl. Well, Michael Jackson. I really wanted to marry him.

How did you discover your acting talent?

I have always loved the camera actually, and ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) went on strike then. Instead of sitting at home doing nothing, I decided to go to an acting school and that was the beginning. I didn’t really have many issues, because I had people guiding me through. And I want to use
this medium to say a big ‘thank you’ to all of them. God bless you all for me.

You’re also the CEO of Tataz Hair. How did that come about?

I have a thing for hair and I always know how to source for good hair. My friends wanted my hair, so I decided to go into buying and selling of weaves, and today, I have Tataz Hair.

What’s your greatest indulgence?Hmm. That would be hair and books.

What attracts you to a man?A good conversation with good looks; and someone who has respect for women.

What’s your favourite outfit?
Boyfriend tops, tights and high tops. There was this story about your friend snatching your boyfriend and you crying in public.

What was that about?
It was a lie; no such thing happened.

You have such a beautiful skin. If you are asked to bare it all for a whopping sum of money in a movie, would you mind?I can’t go full naked for a movie, no matter what.

As a young and vibrant lady, what are your favourite hangout spots?I love Karaoke and Sailors.

The authorities of Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State heaved a sigh of relief on Friday, September 20 when the mystery behind the headless corpses they usually picked in communities under the local government was resolved with the arrest of Seyi Akinrinola when he when to pick a human head he hung on a tree in the bush at Igbo-Oloyin area, Ibadan, Oyo State. Also arrested was Ajitoni Ogundeji whom Akinrinola claimed prompted his search for a head.


On that day, policemen did a lot of work to contain the large crowd which besieged Ojoo division of Oyo State Police Command to catch a glimpse of the human head and the suspects in possession of it. Despite the odour from the decomposed head, the crowd stayed put, as many more rushed to join as soon the news spread to them.
The head was obviously that of a female. The flesh around had eaten off, except for a little which was at the back, and to which the few strands of hair that remained were attached.
Akinrinola thought he was smart. To avoid being detected, after securing a head, the suspect decided to keep it on the tree until it would be dry. But the fart he thought he released silently was loud enough for others to hear.
At about 10: 00a.m. same day, the divisional Police Officer in charge of Ojoo division, Musiliu Doga, received an information that a human head was sighted on a tree. He promptly went out with his men to survey the place. After he confirmed the information he received to be true, the DPO reportedly put some of his men on ground to lay ambush for the person that would come to pick the head.
The plan worked out. According to the Police Public Relation Officer of the command, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, “About an hour, after the policemen laid an ambush, they saw a man who approached the site where the head was hung on a motorcycle. He got down from the bike and, holding a polythene bag, went to where the head was hung and put it the bag. As he made to go, the policemen emerged from hiding and apprehended him.”
Upon arrest, Akinrinola reportedly pleaded to be handled gently as he had an accomplice. He disclosed to the policemen that it was a native doctor he consulted for help who requested for the human head in order to help him prepare a charm that would serve as bullet proof.
In an interview, 30-year-old Akinrinola, who said he was residing at Demilokun area of Igbo Oloyin, disclosed that he was once a butcher but left the job to become a farmer. He denied killing the owner of the head, saying that it belonged to a mad woman whose corpse he saw along Igbo Oloyin road.
“I am a member of Oodua People’s Congress and also a farmer. When we used to go to Saki side to buy cows, armed robbers used to trouble us so much on the way. I left the butcher job about five years ago but I intend to return to it.
“Ogundeji was like a brother in my area, so I told him that I needed a charm that would prevent bullet from entering my body in case I am shot at. He told me that he would do it for me if I could bring a human head.
“I found the woman’s body along Igbo Oloyin road where she died. We did not cut the head; we just pulled it off the neck.”
When questioned on how he knew the corpse was that of a mad woman, Akinrinola replied: “She was a mad woman, even the villagers confirmed it. I was the one who removed the head at about 7.30p.m. about three weeks ago. After cutting it, I travelled, but I learnt that local government officials came to remove the headless body. Ogundeji is a hunter; that was why I believed he would know what to do to prepare bullet proof charm. Two days before my arrest, Ogundeji came to ask whether I got a head and I told him I have found one. I hung the head on a tree beside the house I was living because it was smelling.”
On whether he was an armed robber who needed to protect himself against an onslaught by law enforcement agents, the suspect said: “Never. I have never robbed in my life. My lineage had never been involved in robbery. My arrest is a great shame because I don’t even understand myself. I have never done such a thing in my life. I am an orphan because my parents are dead.
How was he caught? Akinrinola gave an answer: “I believe people from my community who saw the head informed the police.”
However, Ogundeji vehemently denied complicity, saying that the first suspect was just trying to implicate him. The 40-year-old man, who claimed to be a farmer, said he was surprised that Akinrinola mentioned his name because he was also part of the crowd which gathered to behold the spectacle on display when the suspect was arrested.
“I never told him that I would prepare a charm for him because I am not a native doctor. I am a farmer and I also hunt for meat that I would eat,” he said.
Ogundeji revealed that Akinrinola had attempted to get a human head twice before he was caught the third time, but could not explain why it had to be him that the first suspect mentioned among other people living in the community.
“It has been up to a month since I saw Akinrinola last. I have no relationship with him except that we live in the same community. I knew him since he was young before I left the community to learn vulcanizing at Idi-Iroko community. I have a wife and two children but she lives within Ibadan city with them because she said she could not live in a rural community. It was because things were not going well that made me decide to become a farmer and hunter.
“I never knew Akinrinola as an evil person. He learnt butchering in Lagos before he came back to the village about six years ago. He started working as a farmer and also used to uproot trees from parcels of land if the owners want to build on them.
If he was giving a job to do, he used to call me but I was not relating closely with him, we are both temperamental. There is no link between us.
However, sources alleged that Ogundeji was known with fraudulent activities and used to sell a parcel of land to several people, among other things he was known for.
The PPRO told the Saturday Tribune that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, for further investigations. She also warned members of the public to always move about with caution and avoid sending their children out late in the night because of criminally-minded people lurking around.

An Indonesian man whose body is covered with extraordinary tree-like growths has spoken of his hope that an American doctor will cure his unique condition and help him rebuild his family life.

Dede, now 35, baffled medical experts when warty "roots" began growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident. Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been unable to look after his two children Entang and Utis, who are now aged 16 and 18.
They have been brought up apart from their farther by his extended family on the other side of their remote village south of the capital Jakarta. With Dede's condition considered life threatening, he had resigned himself to missing out on the remaining joys of fatherhood.

But now a dermatology expert who flew out from the United States to examine his rare condition says that a course of synthetic Vitamin A should clear up most of the warts, and Dede is contemplating a transformed life.
"I can't work, I can't provide money," Dede said. "I want to be able to take care of them [his children]. I hope to live long enough to see my grandchildren."
After testing samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.
